The Caboose

By Janani Shanmugam

This story follows the rhythm of a Pre-K/K classroom at George Watts and at its heart is Ms. Ihekwu, whose quiet guidance keeps the classroom moving. In a room full of motion, independence, and joyful learning, she offers the kind of steady support that lets young children try, make mistakes, and grow. Like a true caboose, she leads from behind, ensuring no child is ever left out or left behind.

My months in this classroom showed me just how powerful quiet leadership can be. While Montessori encourages freedom and independence, that freedom only works when someone is watching closely enough to notice who needs help and when. That someone for the kids in this class, every single day, was Ms. Ihekwu. Her patience, warmth, and consistency shaped not only the flow of the classroom but the confidence of its students. It was an honor to witness her work; her small gestures, the soft reassurances, the care she offered without fanfare. I hope this project gives others a glimpse of the steady, unseen strength that makes this classroom a community.
