Music Magic

By Faith You

Music Magic is a visual project that invites viewers into Ms. Burke's music classroom at George Watts Montessori. There, students discover rhythm, connection, and creativity through games, dancing, and visual learning. By highlighting the small moments, like the shared smiles, laughter, and the collective energy of singing and movement, the combined photos reveal how music can brighten a child's academic experience and sense of belonging. This story aims to remind viewers of the unique power of arts education and the magic that unfolds when young people are encouraged to explore sound with wonder.

The process of creating this allowed me to experience the classroom as a quiet participant of the daily rhythm; it was like being back in elementary school. Taking photos in an elementary music room means embracing unpredictability. Those unplanned moments became central to the project. I learned how deeply students trust Ms. Burke, and how her patient, playful teaching style makes the space feel safe for growth. What began as a simple profile of a classroom became a portrait of a teacher whose presence brings out the very best in her students.

Working on Music Magic reminded me why documentary style photography matters: it captures the fleeting, ordinary interactions that often go unnoticed. These are the moments that define a community's spirit. I'm grateful to the students who welcomed me into their world without hesitation, and to Ms. Burke for allowing me to witness the care, interactive nature, and intentionality she brings to every lesson. This project is dedicated to all educators who make learning a memorable experience, and to the young musicians who remind us that creativity begins with play.
